Export, PA – AMI DODUCO, a Technitrol (NYSE:TNL) Company, recently presented two publications at the 52nd IEEE Holm Conference on Electrical Contacts in Montreal, Canada.
The conference was attended by about 120 engineers internationally to discuss electrical contact properties in power and signal distribution.
One of the papers, "High Current Erosion of Ag/SnO2 Contacts and Evaluation of Indium Effects in Oxide Properties," authored by Eric Streicher, Chi Leung, Justin Cook and Dennis Fitzgerald and presented by Eric Streicher, demonstrates the effort of AMI DODUCO to develop better contact material to meet the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) requirements in cadmium oxide substitution. The high cost of indium, due to its high demand in flat-panel displays, has made the development of economical cadmium-free solutions more challenging. The paper reviews AMI DODUCO’s evaluation of lower indium content possibilities and their high-current arc erosion characteristics. The research demonstrated that high performance can be achieved using appropriate manufacturing processes.
A second paper "Influence of the Bonding Area of Contact Tips on the Contact Erosion" authored by Dietmar Späth, Michael Finkbeiner, Oliver Lutz and Volker Behrens and presented by Dietmar Späth examined the influence of the size and position of the bonding area of resistance-brazed contact tips made from silver tin oxide (Ag/SnO2 14) on contact erosion in a 11-kW contactor. The results showed that using resistance soldering, a 70% bonding area provides effective insurance against premature contact erosion. Significantly shortened service life occurs when bonding areas are less than 40%. Bonding areas had no observable effect on the temperature rise in the switches tested.
